The Story Behind Rowdie McMahon: A Journey of Struggle and Redemption through Racing

Rowdie McMahon is an Air Force veteran, former nurse, and warrior who answered the call of duty in Afghanistan. While she didn’t see direct combat, the invisible wounds of war followed her home. The trauma of witnessing the human cost of conflict led to deep PTSD. In Las Vegas, the joy she once knew began to fade. She withdrew, isolated herself, and wondered if she would ever truly smile or feel happy again.
That’s when everything began to change.
Through the Wounded Warrior Project, Rowdie discovered she wasn’t alone. Connecting with other veterans — even those with different stories — reminded her that not all wounds are visible, and healing is possible with the right support.
Then came the unexpected turning point. For her birthday, her husband Maverick surprised her with a high-speed ride at SpeedVegas. Behind the wheel, Rowdie came alive — confident, focused, and smiling bigger than Maverick had seen in years. That spark ignited something powerful. Maverick built her a race car, and what started as a gift became a shared passion that would transform both their lives.
Racing mirrored Rowdie’s mental health journey in profound ways. It’s not about racing to the finish line — it’s how you navigate the twists, turns, and challenges along the way. Just like working on a race car, healing requires the right tools at the right moment: assessing, adjusting, pivoting, and learning as your needs evolve. On the track, Rowdie is fully present. The mental chatter quiets. The camaraderie of the team feels like the military family she once knew — people who have your back even on the toughest days.
Watching Rowdie cross the checkered flag for the first time brought tears of joy. It wasn’t just a race win — it was a victory in life itself. Today, Rowdie has come full circle. She feels energized, hopeful, and ready to return to nursing with a focus on mental health, all while continuing to race and heal alongside her community.
Together, “Us” became Shield Maiden Racing.
Honoring Rowdie’s warrior spirit (and her Viking-inspired strength on and off the track), we co-founded Shield Maiden Racing, Inc., a 501(c)(3) nonprofit. Our mission is to create space for veterans, first responders, women, and others facing mental health challenges to find resilience, connection, and purpose through motorsports. We race with purpose — spotlighting the 988 Veterans Crisis Line and showing that healing is an ongoing journey of courage, community, and the right support at the right time.
This is our story. One turn at a time, we’re proving that no one has to fight alone.
Our Mission
Shield Maiden Racing, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit born from one warrior’s journey from darkness to the checkered flag. We harness the raw power of motorsports to heal invisible wounds, restore purpose, and rebuild unbreakable communities.
Inspired by Rowdie McMahon’s courageous battle with PTSD and her rediscovery of joy on the racetrack, we create transformative racing experiences for veterans, first responders, women warriors, and anyone facing mental health challenges. Through endurance racing with the Lucky Dog Racing League, track days, sim training, and hands-on programs, we provide the tools, team, and track time needed to navigate life’s toughest turns.
On the circuit, every corner teaches the same lessons as the mental health journey: assess, adjust, push through adversity, and never race alone. We quiet the noise, reignite the warrior spirit, and prove that healing happens in motion — one lap at a time.
We race with purpose: spotlighting the 988 Veterans Crisis Line and showing the world that no one has to fight their battles in isolation. What begins as survival becomes strength. What begins as trauma becomes triumph.
Our Mission is clear: Turn isolation into connection. Turn pain into power. Turn survivors into shield maidens and warriors who rise together.
No one fights alone. One turn at a time — we race as one.
Our Values
Service: Honoring those who served by paying it forward through racing, mental health awareness, and community support.
Resilience: We believe every warrior has the strength to overcome adversity — on the track and in life.
Camaraderie: Like a military unit or a pit crew, we succeed together. No one races alone.
Integrity: We operate with honesty, transparency, and unwavering commitment to our veterans and mission.
Empowerment: We equip participants with tools, training, and opportunities to reclaim purpose and joy.
